Papua New Guinea Figures > Totemic Fish Carving, Upper Sepik River, New Guinea - 10994

This great piece was collected in the vicinity of Ambunti village on the upper Sepik River. It was made by the Budowi people. Most of the paint is clay-based although the bright red and yellow are likely commercially available tempra paints that were traded up the river. It was collected in December of 1976. It is 17.75 inches long.

I recently obtained a group of artifacts from legendary New Guinea collector Ron Perry who spent many decades working and collecting in New Guinea starting in the early 1960’s. This group came from a crate he shipped from New Guinea in December of 1976. The crate was stored unopened for 46 years until we opened it last year. None of these pieces have been displayed or sold before.
