Papua New Guinea Figures > Old Abelam Men’s House Bird Carving - 10972

This classic bird carving from the Wosera area of New Guinea dates to the late 1960’s or before. It is painted with traditional colors all obtained from local clays and plants. It measures 25 inches tall. This piece was collected in the Wosera in September of 1976.

I recently obtained a group of artifacts from legendary New Guinea collector Ron Perry who spent many decades working and collecting in New Guinea starting in the early 1960’s. This group came from a crate he shipped from New Guinea in December of 1976. The crate was stored unopened for 46 years until we opened it last year. None of these pieces have been displayed or sold before.
