Masks of New Guinea > Very Old Ancestor mask, Middle Sepik River – 23-04
This old mask comes from the Sawos people who in the vicinity of the middle Sepik River in Papua New Guinea. It was probably used in a Men’s House and is carved from balsa wood. For its age, ca 1960’s or earlier, it retains a lot of nice color. Paints were all village-made from clays. Custom mounted and from an old Australian collection. It is 19.5 inches tall.
