Superb Old Middle Sepik Garamut Pounder Pair. Paired pounders are used on the large log drums kept in men’s houses all along the Sepik River. Two men work in unison in very specific rhythms. They are used ceremonially and also as a form of bush telegraph. This superb pair was collected on the middle Sepik River in the 1960’s, but are probably much older. The have a beautiful dark brown polish in the right places from years of use. Custom mounted. One is 29 inches long, the other is 31 inches long. A fine museum quality pair of artifacts.
